Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses SERIES
When I tell you I loved this series…I LOVED this series. I haven’t been so engrossed in a story in years. The obsession is so real and while I had a wicked book hangover from The Simple Wild…there is nothing like a series that sweeps you into an entirely new world. And ACOTAR did just that.
This is a trilogy that has a companion novella as well. We are also due to have another novella that links to the second trilogy set due out next year. How crazy! I can’t wait to devour those as they come out but I am also so impatient for them!
This is 100% a series I will reread and find a lot of comfort in. The characters are so magical and the story is so intricate. It reminded me of why I love to read! I have been reading so much contemporary literature and have always sworn off fantasy. I would say that this series is a perfect blend of high fantasy and romance. It has the fantastical elements that help you escape into a new land while having the utterly human and deeply satisfying elements of love and romance that keep you invested and engaged.
A Court of Thorns and Roses: Book one was a 4 star read for me! It took me a bit to get into it. I did start it at the beginning of the pandemic and I was not in the right mindset. Once I gave it a second chance, I was ALL in. My best advice for this book is to feel your feelings. Love the parts and the characters you love, get angry when you need to get angry, be frustrated with things that feel underwritten and confusing…and then jump RIGHT into book two.
A Court of Mist and Fury: 5 STARS. All the stars! I LOVED this book. Everyone told me that this was their favorite in the series so I had high expectations and they were met at every step of the way. I don’t want to spoil anything but this has one of my favorite male love interests of all time. There is such feminist undertones and just made me have verbal reactions I haven’t had to a book in YEARS. A lot of people talk about Chapter 55…and like, YES. It’s SEXY and so earned. But my favorite moment was Chapter 54. The honesty. Oh, I just loved it. Can you tell? You will have a massive book hangover and will need to jump IMMEDIATELY to book three. I think I wondered around aimlessly for 24 hours after finishing, just waiting for my copy of the 3rd book to arrive.
A Court of Wings and Ruin: 4 stars! This one had a different tone to ACOMAF but it’s still perfection. I felt myself rushing through it because I couldn’t put it down but still wanting to savor it. Somehow, a 700 page book left me wanting more. I am SO in love with these characters and this world. This one is VERY action oriented. I mean, it’s abbreviated as ACOWAR which is purposeful. It doesn’t have the slow burn romance aspect of ACOMAF that made me fall in love, but it is grounded in so much more than that. You get more about the faerie lands and history which is fascinating. By the third book, you want to know it all anyway. The side characters are brilliant in this series and the final book in the trilogy just brings you closer to them. I can’t wait for the series to continue!
A Court of Frost and Starlight: Ah, the novella. You earn this little book upon finishing the Intensity of ACOWAR. Is it the best? No. Is it everything you wanted and more? Yes.
If you couldn’t tell that i’m obsessed…
I may or may not have gone a hunt for some ACOTAR themed ASMR rooms too…
Velaris The Winter Court The Autumn Court
And I’m definitely hunting for more!!!
Did I convince you to read this series yet? I swear, I was SUCH a skeptic and now I’m kicking myself for leaving it for so long. I can’t wait to reread it! I may have already started to listen to the first book on audio, since it’s so comforting to return to the faerie realm (whoops). They’re all free on Scribd! I’m telling you, you will want to go back to the beginning to read it all with hindsight. SO many hidden things, so much explained, it’s a true joy to read.
