The 10 Best Books to Read in Winter

Ah Winter, the season we all seem to dread but also secretly crave. Winter is the season for slowing down. It’s a time for big books, getting lost in a new series, watching all the shows people raved about last year but we didn’t get to, and escaping to warmer climates for a week of sunshine.

I love Winter because it’s a season that I know will end. The cold and darkness won’t be here forever, but while they are here, I try to embrace them. This year, I really started to embrace the hygge ideologies. Lots of candles and twinkling lights, soft clothes, hearty meals packed with veggies and protein, and not making too many plans. I like to be home during this time of year, focusing on me.

I also love to read seasonally and “on theme” when I can. I personally have been craving a good contemporary romance set at ski resort or in a ski town! So I put together a list of the best books to read in Winter as well as some romances set in ski towns and ski resorts that are on my TBR! Happy Reading!

Wintering by Katherine May

A little nonfiction on how to embrace rather than dread Winter.

Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger

Magic, monsters, and seeing an America that is slightly different from reality.

The Boys of Winter by Wayne Coffey

I have a fascination with the Olympics, particularly the 1980 games in Lake Placid. Miracle is one of my favorite movies and I thought this book, though nonfiction, moved like fiction and was fascinating.

Beartown by Fredrik Backman

A book about a hockey town that will stay with you forever. It’s about way more than hockey but it’s one of those books that makes you feel the chill in your bones. Backman is a must read author.

One by One by Ruth Ware

A thriller at a ski chalet!

ROMANCE

Come As You Are by Jess K. Hardy

I think this is a great book to pick up for anyone who likes to read romance novels with older protagonists! The FMC is 46 years old and is trying to save her family’s ski mountain when she meets a 53 year old recovering addict, who’s devoted every minute to working at a sober living home.

Running Wild by KA Tucker

Part of the Wild series by KA Tucker, but this book follows Marie, a veterinarian in Alaska! It’s cozy, sexy, heartbreaking and has the best setting of Alaska during the famous Iditarod race.

Madigan Mountain Series

This is a series with three standalone novels by different authors set in a Colorado ski town. The authors include Devney Perry, Rebecca Yarros, and Sabrina Bowen.

Forever Never by Lucy Score

Lucy Score is the queen of small town romance and this cover has me wanting to read this book!

Love with Altitude Series by Daisy Prescott

I haven’t read this series but it feels very Hallmark-y in a small ski town!
