Weekly Wrap Up 5/20/22

There’s only so many times someone can say “this was a heavy week” before we accept the reality that the state of the country is worse than we could have imagined. I’ve struggled this week to not center myself after the racist attack that occurred near where we live Buffalo, New York. (We live in the suburb of Williamsville) It has been a very heavy week here and I’ve barely begun to process it, but we need to take action. While I’ve been sharing bits of normalcy online and resources, I’ve really struggled with the proximity of this attack and how sick it makes me think that the white supremacist drove over 200 miles to target innocent (and mostly elderly) Black people. It’s vile and pure evil.

This weekend I attended Micah Hyde’s Charity Softball Game where the Buffalo Bills play and raise money for the Imagine for Youth Foundation. A portion of the proceeds were donated to the families of the victims. Like I said, I’ve just begun to really process the attack. But this was a healing moment to gather and honor the fallen.

I started rehearsals this week for my summer show and when I had an hour between work and rehearsal, I found an empty coffee shop to enjoy a quick dinner and read. I knew I was safe there and that overwhelming sense of privilege washed over me. I went grocery shopping yesterday morning. Another place I was safe. Because I’m white. We must use our privilege for good. We must fight against the radical ideologies that have taken over the GOP. We cannot let hatred and fear win. I will not stand for it.

If you are able to support the Buffalo community, there are resources that can be found here. Right now, food and basic needs like formula, feminine hygiene products, and non perishables are most important. The Buffalo Bills website has collected multiple resources and I’ve found it to be the most comprehensive, for all manner of donations.

And please, remember to register to vote. There is too much on the line for these midterm elections.

I share all of this amongst my weekly reads and scrolling because while life does go on, we do not need to accept this as our reality. We can make change, we have to fight for it.
