Review: Inheritance by Katharine McGee

The American Royals series is one that is particularly nostalgic for me, not only because I’m a sucker for royal fiction, but because it was one of the first ARCs I received when I started Read & Wright. It marked a huge milestone for me and it’s a series that has remained special to me. I also met Katharine McGee at Shakespeare & Co, one of my favorite indie bookstores in NYC, and she was a delight.

When Majesty came out, I was sent another ARC and I read it in our tiny studio apartment during the worst days of the early Pandemic. It brought me so much joy and distraction from the world and the deep sadness of postponing our wedding.

Overall, this was a wonderful novella that gave me the gift of returning to some of my favorite characters. It didn’t really reveal anything super new to me, but I still had a great time reading it! I’ll be reading Rivals soon and I can’t wait!

What I Liked:

  1. Another Glimpse Into the World—I love the American Royals world and I’m so excited to read Rivals! My ARC has been patiently waiting for me. In this novella, we learn about what happened the night of Sam and Jeff’s graduation party in detail, which has been a missing piece in the story for so long.

  2. Beatrice’s POV—Honestly, I love Beatrice and relate to her the most out of all the characters in this series. I really liked this side of Beatrice, even though it was a little difficult to adjust back to the character she was spending her time with.

What Didn’t Work:

  1. Too Many POV’s—This is one of my usual criticisms of the series, but I feel like four POVs is just too many. But that also could be because I really am only invested in Beatrice’s story lol. However, I will say, I had a great time getting to know more of Daphne and Nina. I came around to Sam during Majesty so pre American Royals Sam still rubs me the wrong way.
