Books that Surprised me

I am a self proclaimed creature of habit. But every now and then, I’ll feel adventurous and try something new. There is nothing I love more than being surprised. You’d think as a planner I’d hate it, but I love it because I don’t have to put any effort into it.

When it comes to books, I’d say I generally gravitate toward particular genres: women’s fiction, memoirs, YA. I love Harry Potter, but I rarely try other fantasy series even though I’d really love to fall into a new world again. A lot of you tell me we have similar reading taste, so I compiled a list of books that surprised me. I read them on a whim and completely loved them! Here’s hoping one of them sparks something in you too.

Recursion by Blake Crouch—If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know I was obsessing over this book. It’s TOTALLY not something I would have picked up without Book of the Month! It’s a dystopian novel with time travel, science, and just the right amount of thriller/mystery/romance to keep you hooked. Loved it, a 5 star read.

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid—This is one of the most talked about books of 2019 and it’s the only reason why I picked it up but I absolutely LOVED it. I found the interview style so engaged (and I’ve heard it’s terrific on audio for that reason). Never would have picked it up on my own!

Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple—Last week I shared my love for this book in celebration of the movie release!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks—Read.This.Book. It’s so important and the science/medical aspects are not overwhelming at all!

All We Ever Wanted—I had never read any Emily Giffin before but I really loved this one. It wasn’t as light or fluffy as I imagined and discussed some incredibly important topics. Highly recommend!

Miss You by Kate Eberlan—This was a random library pick up for me and I absolutely loved it. It was kind of nice to go into a book blind with no expectations.

The Truth About Happily Ever After by Carole Kazzo—Such an underrated book! If you’re a Disney lover, this is sort of like a fictionalized version of it. I really liked it!

Just a few to think about from my own reading list in the last few years! What books surprised you?
