Review: Hot Mess by Emily Belden
Over Memorial Day Weekend, I just wanted to relax. Normally we go to the Adirondacks that weekend, but Nick was away for work in Canada. I took it as a sign that I should have a chill weekend at my parents house and read all the books. I could sit by the water for hours and read, while Nick cannot (lol) so it was my chance to do it!
I read Hot Mess in two days, which was pretty impressive for a 400+ page books if I do say so myself. But I absolutely loved it! I big thank you to Emily Belden for taking the time to send me a copy and signing it!
From the publisher: “Twentysomething Allie Simon is used to playing by the rules—until Chicago’s most sought-after, up-and-coming culinary genius, Benji Zane, walks into her world and pulls her into his. The only thing more renowned than Benji’s mouthwatering masterpieces and equally luscious good looks? His struggle with addiction and his reckless tendency to live life on the edge, no matter the havoc he wreaks along the way. But loving someone means supporting him no matter what, or so Allie tells herself. That’s why, when Benji’s offered the chance to light up foodie hot spot Randolph Street with a high-profile new restaurant, Allie takes the ultimate risk and invests her life savings in his dream.
Then one day Benji disappears, relapsing to a place where Allie can’t reach him. Left with nothing but a massive withdrawal slip and a restaurant that absolutely must open in a matter of weeks, Allie finds herself thrust into a world of luxury and greed, cutthroat business and sensory delight. Lost in the mess of it all, she can either crumble completely or fight like hell for the life she wants and the love she deserves.”
This book was really fun. I’m a big fan of stories about the high profile restaurant business, because it’s a world I know very little about! If you liked Sweetbitter by Stephanie Dray or the movie No Reservations, I think you’ll really enjoy this book.
I also applaud Emily for writing such a brave and honest look at addiction, especially being in love with an addict. I loved the movie A Star is Born because it was such an honest look at what it means to love and care for an addict in your life; I think it’s something we need to see more.
This book is sexy, fun, and delicious. 4/5 stars for me and I think it’s a perfect summer read!
I want to try something new with my reviews. When writing them, I never want to give too much away but I think there are some important things to note.
