NaNoWriMo 2019 Update
If you didn’t know, November is National Novel Writing Month. Every year, there’s an organized group called NaNoWriMo that encourages writers of all walks of life to write every day in the month of November in the hopes of finishing 50,000 words. A whole novel.
I have never participated before and decided to jump in with both feet! It has always been a dream of mine to write a book. I’ve dabbled for years and figured there’s no time like the present. After starting out strong in the first two weeks of the month I…kinda fell off.
I have a confession. I haven’t written in over a week. I’m still at 15,000 words but last week was so hectic with work, writing fell to the wayside. But I’m okay with it. The ideas of NaNoWriMo are pretty clear: write everyday. You need to sit down and just DO IT. But it’s really tough when to balance sometimes.
This week, I’m going to make sure I write at least 500 words a day, even if it’s nonsense. Just a small goal but that can build into something.
I’m really exciting about the novel I’m writing and it has given me a greater appreciation for deadlines and authors. Writing isn’t easy, it’s discipline. But it’s the same with acting and the entertainment business. You get out of it what you put in.
I like to write chronologically but sometimes I’ll write some dialogue that I don’t want to appear until later. I also like to make sure I’m well researched in the topics I’m writing about.
My novel is inspired by a few of my favorite books: Know My Name by Chanel Miller, Beartown by Frederik Backman, The Boys of Winter, and Michigan Vs. The Boys.
I hope one day I’ll be able to share it with the world, and soon.
And don’t forget, get excited for Winter Street Week 2019! I announced it on my instagram last night, but it’ll be coming to the blog next week, just in time for the holidays!
