April Showers: Books that Feature Storms

This is a very specific thing to like in books, but I love to read about storms! I’ve always been fascinated by storms. Growing up on the water in New England, I experienced a number of hurricanes and blizzards. I remember the days of prep, the anticipation, the dread if the power went out, but also how my imagination came to life while we waited for the lights to come back. We were lucky to only have a couple storms that were devastating (a tree fell on our house during Super Storm Sandy) but i’ve always been obsessed with weather. Maybe it’s because I’m a sailor, so I had to be able to read weather patterns, or maybe it’s just cause my mood is so affected by the weather.

One of my favorite movies is The Day After Tomorrow. I don’t know what that says about me.

This has translated to my reading! I have become obsessed with books that feature a good storm. Give me rain, forced proximity, needing to huddle together for warmth! It’s so satisfying. It raises the stakes! And it also sets vibe. I recently read Just for the Summer by Abby Jimenez and while a big storm isn’t the focus in that book, there is a rainy day where the characters are stuck together in a lake house on a small island. It was so cozy and relaxed me. I just love a good storm!

Swift and Saddled by Lyla Sage

A western romance featuring a cowboy and interior designer who get caught in a storm when tensions finally rise…set in Wyoming! It’s the second book in an interconnected series.

Drop Cover and Hold On by Jasmine Guillory

A novella featuring an earthquake! Which I know technically isn’t a storm, but it is a natural disaster event that heightens the tension between the characters!

Beach Read by Emily Henry

If you’ve heard about the “there’s only one bed” trope, but what about “there’s only one tent in the rain” cause it’s definitely elite.

The Islanders by Meg Mitchell Moore

This isn’t a romance, it’s more an ensemble cast of characters on the tiny Block Island, off the coast of tiny Rhode Island. It’s always been a stand out read for me and there’s a lot of drama surrounding a storm!

Better Than Fiction by Alexa Martin

I love the scenery in this book and a storm in the Colorado mountains after a day date? Oh yes.

The Rest of the Story by Sarah Dessen

I didn’t grow up reading Sarah Dessen like a lot of other people my age, but I absolutely read this because it focused on sailing. The storm is a huge part of the story and it makes the stakes so high!

Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez

The storm in this book is the catalyst for all the action, which spurs some of my favorite books by this author.

Three Swedish Mountain Men by Lily Gold

I haven’t forgotten snowstorms! This is a Why Choose romance featuring a very dramatic blizzard.

The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager

Sager is a polarizing author but I am always entertained by his books. This one is a little out there but again, entertaining! The storm happens at the climax of the book.

Island Time by Georgia Clark

I write a lot about I love when the setting of a book is the ultimate character and that is this book. I believe it’s a Tsunami/storm that strands two families brought together by their engaged daughters on a remote island off the coast of Australia. It’s SO good.
