How to Become an Audiobook Reader
If you’re a listener of the podcast, Read It Or List It, you’ll know we’re doing a series right now all about audiobooks. I’m often asked how I choose my audiobooks. What makes a book great on audio? How do I listen? What are the best genres to read via audio?
I am someone who chooses to read audiobooks because I love to read as much as possible, but for some it’s the only way they read. Which is why audiobook absolutely count as reading! It’s silly that it’s still a conversation we need to be having. Ashley and I discuss it in more detail on an episode of the podcast if you’re interested!
Find a Narrator you Love
The key to a good audiobook is a GOOD narrator. Someone who really brings the story to life! I have my favorites but I’m always keeping track of new narrators who make listening to audiobooks fun. Some books just really work in the genre but it’s also okay if a book doesn’t work for you.
Try Different Genres
I started listening to audiobooks in the Non-Fiction Genre. I loved memoirs mostly, especially those read by the author. Jessica Simpson’s is one of my favorites! As well as Selma Blair’s. It’s like a long form interview or podcast. But once I got used the style, I branched into other genres and now I love love loveee to listen to Rom Coms and YA on audio, with the occasional literary fiction!
Listen While Doing Chores or Driving
My favorite part of my Sunday reset routine is to put on an audiobook and reset my home. I put laundry away, do the dishes, plan out our meals, and straighten up my office. They’re also great accompaniment while walking the dog!
Listen to a Past Favorite
You know that feeling when you want to watch your favorite book because you’re so tired and need the comfort, but there isn’t a movie version of it? The audiobook can be a great replacement. I often reread favorites this way, but it’s a great way to get into the style! If you know the story, you won’t be afraid of missing important details as your brain gets used to the storytelling.
Libro.fm
Libro.fm is by far my FAVORITE way to listen to audiobooks because it also supports independent bookstores! I highly, highly recommend this service. It’s $14.99/month and they offer sales often as well putting together awesome audiobook lists.
Audible
Now, I am not a huge fan of Amazon when it comes to books. But, if you read a lot of indie published authors, there’s a great link between Kindle Unlimited and Audible where you get the ebook and audiobook. I don’t have a subscription currently, but it is an option.
Libby
If you’re primarily a library reader, did you know you can get audiobooks from the library (and not on cassette or CD)? Use the Libby App! The best part is, you can usually sign up for multiple libraries to increase your chances of getting something off a long waitlist.
Scribd
I have loved Scribd for years. I use it for sheet music and scripts but in 2020, started using it for audiobooks! Sometimes the app is finicky for me, but they always have tons of new releases and have a great selection of Romance. Highly recommend! I love the save feature most, so I can keep track of what I want to read.
I’d love to know if you have any favorite audiobook narrators, books, or services!
