Pages as Planes: Traveling
When I started this series, it was deep in the pandemic when I was having some serious wanderlust and it wasn’t safe to travel. We’ve covered so many places, from New York City to Paris to Scotland and even California, but today, I wanted to focus on the traveling aspect of this series. Whether it’s backpacking through Europe, hiking, the Iditarod, or Hawaii, I hope you’ll enjoy the thrill of traveling through these pages.
Fiction
Enjoy the View by Sarah Morgenthaler
Go off to a small town in Alaska with River, a Hollywood starlet and Easton, a grouchy mountaineer. A documentary, all the small town vibes, and literal mountains that need to be climbed to determined where River is supposed to be.
On Location by Sarah Evacharre Smith
This is another Romance that involves a film crew, but this time a reality TV show in the desert. The setting is BREATHTAKING and so fun.
Running Wild by KA Tucker
Is it a book list of mine if I don’t include a book by KA Tucker? I loved Marie’s story that takes place during the Iditarod!
I See London, I See France by Sarah Mylnowski
I remember reading this book in 24 hours on New Years Day in 2017 or 2018. Nick was working and I stayed holed up devouring this book. It’s about two friends who plan a trip after graduating from high school and it has all the New Adult feels. It was so fun and also heartfelt. Plus, you get to visit places like Amsterdam, Monaco, Paris, and see some traveling mishaps that feel all too relatable.
Eighty Days to Elsewhere by KC Dyer
If you like the reality show The Amazing Race, you’ll totally enjoy this book!
Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal
It’s no secret I love a retelling and this book brings us another Jane Austen retelling but this time it’s Pride and Prejudice set in Pakistan. Even though you know the ending, the TENSION! It’s so lovely.
Love & Olives by Jenna Evans Welch
Did anyone else become obsessed with all these Greece after The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? If yes, you’ll love the third installment in the Love & series.
Simmer Down by Sarah Smith
There are only three things you need to know about this book: Hawaii, Food Truck, Rivalry to Lovers.
The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas
Fake Dating, enemies to lovers, and a family wedding in Spain! Perfect for fans of The Hating Game.
Non Fiction
Where the Deer and the Antelope Play by Nick Offerman
I’m a huge fan of Nick Offerman thanks to Parks and Rec and this book is supposed to be utterly charming, an ode to the great outdoors.
Becoming Odyssa: Adventures on the Appalachian Trail by Jennifer Pharr Davis
“After graduating from college, Jennifer isn’t sure what she wants to do with her life. Through inexperienced and unprepared, she feels drawn to the Appalachian Trail and sets out along on the long-distance footpath that stretches 2, 175 miles from Georgia to Maine. The next five months are the most physically and emotionally challenging of her life—coping with blisters and aching shoulders, hiking through endless torrents of rain and a blizzard, facing unwanted company and encountering tragedy. The trail becomes a modern day Odyssey that tests Jennifer’s faith in God, humanity and herself. But even at her lowest points, it provides enduring friendships, unexpected laughter, and the gift of self-discovery. With every step she takes, Jennifer transitions from an over-confident college graduate to a student of the trail. As she travels along the ridges of the ancient mountain chain, she realizes that she isn’t walking through nature—she realizes she is part of nature. And she learns that the Appalachian Trails is more than a 2,175 mile hike: it is a journey that will change a person forever.” —Amazon
The Unlikely Thru-Hiker by Derrick Lugo
“The Unlikely Thru-Hiker is the story of how a young Black man from the city, unfamiliar with both the outdoors and thru-hiking culture, sets off with an extremely overweight pack and a willfully can-do attitude to conquer the infamous trail. What follows are lessons on preparation, humility, and nature's wild unpredictability. But this isn't a hard-nosed memoir of discouragement. What sets Lugo apart from the typical walk in the woods is his refusal to let any challenge squash his inner Pollyanna. Through it all, Lugo perseveres with humor, tenacity, and an unshakeable commitment to grooming - earning him the trail name "Mr. Fabulous" - that sees him from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin in Maine.” —Amazon
