Books I want to see on Stage and Screen
In a Q&A a couple weeks ago, I was asked what books I’d want to see turned into plays and movies. I’ve mentioned this before but one of the long term goals I have for Read & Wright is to create my own production company and turn books and movies by women, about women, into TV Shows and Movies. There are some books I read that I also think would make fantastic plays! Here are some that are on the top of my list right now, as well as two bonus ones I’d want to see done right. A few of you may be able to guess which two…
The Simple Wild by KA Tucker
It Happened One Summer + Hook Line and Sinker
Lease on Love by Fallon Ballard
The Playbook Series by Alexa Martin
Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano
Legendborn by Tracey Deonn
Tokyo Ever After by Emiko Jean
Well Met by Jenn DeLuca
The Guncle by Steven Rowley
The Comeback by E.L. Shen
Meet Me at Midnight by Jessica Pennington
Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender
The Two I’d Remake and Get Right
Avalon High by Meg Cabot
Disney Channel made Avalon High into a movie and just totally changed everything that made it special to me. I reread the book during the early days of the pandemic and while it felt so much shorter than I remembered, it still held up and fascinated me. I think it would make a fantastic film if a darker tone is taken with it!
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
And of course, Ella. While I do enjoy the movie with Anne Hathaway, I have always viewed it as a separate entity from the book. I also reread this book in the early days of Stay At Home orders and it was even better than I remembered. I would love to find the balance between the dark and emotional with the hopeful and fairy tale aspect. The movie is fun but it was too silly. Hugh Dancy was a dreamy though.
Now i’d love to know who you’d cast or what books you want to see brought to life!
