Pupdate: One Month with Beasley
Now that we’ve had Beasley for one month, I thought it was finally to write about our puppy process and how we knew we were ready to bring her home. Nick grew up with dogs and I have always wanted a dog but with our busy professional lives, it never was the right time. After we moved and Nick’s work life became a 9-5 schedule, we started thinking we would be able to handle a new addition to our family.
After moving (and remember, I wasn’t happy about moving), I knew I needed a companion during the day. So for my birthday (December 30), Nick gifted me a little stuffed puppy with a real collar around it’s neck. I was so excited; we immediately decided on her name, Beasley, and then quickly got nervous, especially now that it was “real.”
So if my birthday is in December, why did we wait until June to bring her home? While we wanted her immediately, we were still in limbo with our wedding. We weren’t sure if it was going to happen like we planned or at all, so I didn’t think adding a brand new puppy would be wise. Also, the winters here are COLD. Once we had an idea that we knew we wanted to bring her home in the summer, we didn’t have much to do until after the wedding.
Beasley was born April 7 and we were able to bring her home when she was 9 weeks old. She is sweet and VERY social. She loves playing with us and other dogs. She loves to sniff everything in sight and lay in the shade chewing sticks. She’ll do anything for peanut butter and gets better and better every day with commands.
Her favorite place to nap is in front of the AC vent and her favorite place to hide is under our bed. She likes to sit in her dad’s dirty clothes in the closet and play hide and seek. She wiggles her butt when she’s happy and her left hind leg goes wild if you give her a belly rub.
Beasley is an Australian Shepherd so she is a working dog with a lot of energy. We knew this going in but we have to make sure she gets three long walks in a day. Having a puppy is even better than I imagined, but it is also a lot harder. Everyone warned me and I wouldn’t change it for anything, but she does take up a big part of my day. Still, I have never felt happier or more fulfilled.
Plus, the grounds crew on our property say she’s the cutest dog in the complex. We love her so much and I’m not ready for her to grow up!
Questions from You!
Where did you get here? How did you choose between adopt/shop?
We adopted Beasley from a farm In Guilford, NY! One day, I want to have a rescue. Ultimately, since I never had a dog before, I wasn’t sure I knew enough to give a dog who had been through a traumatic situation a good home. Now that I’m learning more, I feel much more confident that one day our home will be the perfect place for a rescue pup!
How big will she get?
When we brought her home, she was only 7lbs 🥲 she is now 14lbs! She will get to be between 35-40lbs.
Breed choice and apartment living
I have always wanted an Aussie. My best friend had one growing up who I just loved. They are very energetic and love to play, so we just make sure we carve out time for her each day to take long walks and get lots of playing in! We have brain teaser/puzzle toys for her to make sure she isn’t bored.
We walk her for 30-45 mins in the morning, 30 mins at lunch, and wait until it’s cool enough in the evening for a long 45 min-1 hour family walk. She has dark fur so I always worry about her overheating in the afternoon sun.
We currently live in an apartment but we’re really lucky that we live in a walkable neighborhood with plenty of green space and sidewalks. We also have friends with an Aussie and a fenced in yard, so she usually goes over there a couple times a week to play and run around safely off leash!
