Writing Update #10: My Writing Routine
I used to be someone who thrived in Fall and Winter, but after this year, I think I have transitioned to a Spring and Summer kind of gal. When it comes to my writing, I thrive at night and when I’m sitting in the sun. I don’t know why that pulls more motivation from me, but soaks into my brain and I feel more creative.
Does that sound wacky? Probably. But in writing my own book, I’ve realized I have to embrace the wacky if it gets results. Also, in writing these updates, I realized how hard it is to write about writing. Ironic, isn’t? But it has inspired me to do something that you’ll learn about soon!
All in all, I am so excited about where my novel is going! So today I wanted to walk you through my writing routine. I love learning about other people’s habits to see if they’ll work for me!
Shower—If you’ve been following you know i always shower before I write. I make sure to do so in complete silence and just trying to focus on my story and characters. It really helps focus me and the water always provides inspiration!
Choose My Setting—I write at my desk or on the patio so it usually just depends on the weather!
Music/ASMR Room—I love writing with instrumental music or an ASMR room. I have a writing playlist on Spotify and an ASMR Room playlist!
Journal—Once I’m settled, I journal about anything that came to me in the shower, whether it’s a scene, dialogue, or plot point.
List—I like having a plan so I list what I want to accomplish, like starting or finishing a scene or expanding on some backstory.
Write for 1 Hour—My one rule with my writing is that i commit to one hour. Even if just me complaining that something isn’t working, I put words on the page.
Wrap Up or Keep Going—If I’m on a roll, I write past the one hour mark until I’m out of steam. If I’m not, I wrap it up for another day!
Journal (Reflection)—I always journal about how that night’s session went. Was it productive? What worked? How is the story progressing? What do I want to tackle next? Random thoughts about characters or the setting? Just something so I’m aware of how I spent my time.
And that’s it! I don’t know why I love writing at night so much, but I just find myself able to think more clearly. Probably cause I’m not thinking about the million other things that need to get done.
I’d love to know what you are interested in learning about my writing next! Any ideas? Are these super boring?
