All About My Kindle Paperwhite

Last week on Instagram, I shared that I had been suffering from really bad headaches due to increased screen time. I have never had a desk job. I always worked on my blog but I was in shows or on set or auditioning and nannying, so I never spent most of my days on my computer. But now that I am teaching acting online in addition to my blog, my eyes are TIRED.

However, I do love ebooks. I used to read on the Kindle app on my iPad but sometimes I don’t want to wear my blue light glasses all day and in the evening, so I decided it was time to invest in an e-reader. I polled my followers and these were the top 3 recommendations: Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Oasis, KOBO.

I’ve had A LOT of questions about the Kindle so I wanted to round up my thoughts here.

What Kindle Do I Have?

I chose the 8GB Kindle Paperwhite in Twilight Blue. I bought this decal so that the border will be white since the paperwhite doesn’t come in white and I prefer it to the dark grey. It’s also waterproof so I’m excited to use it in the bath and pool this summer!

First Impressions

It is so much smaller than I thought it would be and I love that! It’s lightweight and I really enjoy reading on it.

Why a Kindle in addition to my iPad?

The reason I wanted a Kindle was to cut back on blue light. Even with my iPad on dark mode/night mode, it was still too bright. Especially if I wanted to read in bed while Nick was asleep. It is also much heavier and I found myself not drawn to pick it up. Most of the ARCs (Advanced Readers Copies) I get are digital copies, so I need a e-reader I want to pick up. This is going to sound so nerdy, but I have so much fun reading with the kindle.

How much do you save, on average, by purchasing an ebook as opposed to a physical book?

Kindle prices vary, as there are generally a lot of deals, but on average a Kindle book is between $12-15 USD. So you’re saving between $10-15 USD for a new release.

Using a Kindle with the Library

There are great apps like Libby, Overdrive, and Hoopla that allow you to browse your library’s ebook selection! I’m excited to use this when it comes to books I’m listening to on audio but maybe aren’t working. I think it will also be a great way to cut back on the amount of books I own that I don’t love. If I read something in an ebook that I LOVE, I’ll purchase it for my collection. Nick is very excited about this aspect.

Do I prefer it over physical books now?

No way. Physical books are always the best! But the convenience of the Kindle is something I’m really excited about. I always dreaded reading on iPad and didn’t prioritize the ebooks I had. Now I am excited to pick up my kindle! I also like that it feels less like a phone screen. With my iPad, I knew it could do “other” things, like YouTube Videos and Netflix. I like having a dedicated e-reader.

Pop Socket vs. Case

I chose to get a popsocket instead of a case because I keep my kindle in a mini Happy Go Lovely Sleeves sleeve! The popsocket makes it so easy to hold, I love it! Obviously I had to get a Velaris one with one of my favorite quotes.

And that’s it! If you have any other questions, let me know! I love love love my Kindle, even after only having it for a few days!
